How many US Reps does 2M barrels of oil buy?

oil-on-water Last night I caught the beginning of the 10 pm news. This story was the lead. I noticed that, while the names and states these asshats represent were discussed, their party affiliation was not.

Now, way back in high school and college when I was taking journalism classes, we learned that when dealing with an elected official..like say...oh...a congressman, the proper syntax (ok, they said 'style' but I prefer syntax) is to state the person's name, then in parentheses their party affiliation and state. Here is an example Sen. Robert Dole (R-KS). See? Always with the party.

But the news story last night, it didn't tell us if the lawmakers that took the Saddam sponsored junket were dems or repubs. I told the 5/8 and No. 1 Son that those three had to be democrats, because if they had been republicans, the news bimbo would have said so. Instead of the headline being "Saddam Paid for Lawmakers' Iraq Trip" the headline would have read "Saddam Paid for Republican Lawmakers' Iraq Trip."

No. 1 Son had some trouble understanding why. I tried to explain to him that the news reporting is mostly biased towards the leftards. That most of the reporters and editors are leftards, and glorify the likes Chavez and Castro, which is why we see so little news about the piss-poor living conditions, and the atrocious human rights violations that occur there.

I don't think he completely understood what I was getting at. But he'll learn. We all had to learn that lesson. The hard lesson when we discovered that Dan and Peter and Tom weren't giving us the full, un-biased skinny and any damn thing they talked about.

Now, the question is, did these fellows know their trip was sponsored by the Butcher of Baghdad? Probably not. I don't believe that any lawmaker who would travel to Iraq on the eve of the US invasion could be smart enough to figure it out. But then again, only they know. I mean, it was, after all, paid for by a charity group. And seriously, how would these male-bimbos know they guy who runs the charity was getting oil in exchange for getting them to Iraq?

I'm certain though, if the congressmen would have been republicans, we'd be hearing all the screaming and crying of corruption that the leftards are so good at spewing.

Crescent of Betrayal...

Editor's Note: I have been part of this blogburst for many months now. I fully support this endeavor. We, as Americans, cannot....must not allow a memorial which is supposed to enshrine the heroes and victims of Flight 93 for all times, be hijacked by those who wish to honor the perpetrators of this heinous event. Please, I beg of you, please sign at least the electronic petition. It won't cost you anything but a few minutes of your time. Americans must stand up for justice. This sham of a memorial MUST be stopped.
~Thank you

Petition for Congressional investigation

 Blogburst logo, no accident

A petition to stop the crescent memorial is now being circulated on the ground in western Pennsylvania. As a complement to this old fashioned canvassing effort, an electronic petition has also been created at ipetitions.com. Please circulate far and wide!

The petitions highlight four cases of apparent Islamic symbolism in the memorial design. Here is the text (electronic):

Call for Congressional investigation of Islamic symbolism in the Flight 93 memorial

Many features of the chosen Flight 93 Memorial design are intolerable:

1. THE GIANT CRESCENT. The centerpiece of the original “Crescent of Embrace” design was a giant red Islamic shaped crescent. Every particle of this original crescent design remains completely intact in the so-called redesign, which only added a few irrelevant trees. The giant crescent is still there.

2. IT POINTS TO MECCA. The giant crescent points to Mecca. A crescent that Muslims face into to face Mecca is called a "mihrab," and is the central feature around which every mosque is built. The Flight 93 Memorial is on track to become the world's largest mosque.

3. THE ISLAMIC SUNDIAL. The minaret-like Tower of Voices is a year-round accurate Islamic prayer-time sundial (one of many typical mosque features that are realized in the crescent design, all on the same epic scale as the half mile wide central crescent).

4. THE 44 BLOCKS. There are 44 glass blocks on the flight path, equaling the number of passengers, crew, AND terrorists. Intentional or not, these features are entirely unacceptable. This travesty must stop and investigations must begin.

1) We the undersigned call on our state and federal legislators to undertake their own thorough and independent investigations of the Flight 93 Memorial design. The truth must come out.

2) We ask that the crescent design be scraped entirely and that it be replaced with a new design that is not tainted by Islamic or terrorist memorializing symbolism.

3) We demand a fitting and proper memorial that HONORS the brave men and women of Flight 93.

Please take a minute to electronically sign this petition. All signatures collected by the end of April will be printed out and delivered to the May 3rd public meeting of the Memorial Project, along with Xeroxes of the hand-signed petitions.

That is just the start. There will be another public meeting in August, where we hope to present a much larger pile of petitions, and all signatures will eventually be delivered to the Pennsylvania state legislature and to Congress. Keep sending until the crescent design is stopped!

In the short term, we have a number of supporters in the Pennsylvania legislature at this point who are working to gain backing for an investigation. A demonstration of public demand should help that effort.

The paper petition

In order to make the paper petition self-sufficient, there is a second page, to be printed on the back of the petition, that provides explanations and graphical documentation of the four highlighted cases of Islamic symbolism. The idea is to have a petition that can circulate virally. Anyone can print it out and have enough information right on the petition itself to know that the objections are legitimate. (Mailing instructions are also included.)

Here are the back-side explanations of the four intolerable features:

1. THE GIANT CRESCENT

The original Crescent of Embrace design was a giant Islamic shaped crescent with the crash site placed between the crescent tips, in the position of the star on an Islamic crescent and star flag:

Crescent and flag22%

The redesign was supposed to eliminate these Islamic symbol shapes, but as Congressman Tom Tancredo wrote to the Park Service in November 2007, these features remain completely intact in the so-called redesign, which only disguised the crescent with a few additional trees. Architect Paul Murdoch’s refusal to eliminate the Islamic symbol shapes suggests intent, but intentional or not, these symbol shapes are unacceptable. Congressman Tancredo is now calling for the crescent design to be scrapped in its entirety, and we join in that request.

2. IT POINTS TO MECCA

Several credible analysts have found that a person facing directly into the giant crescent (still present in the redesign) will be facing almost exactly at Mecca:

60%SizeMeccaOrientationGraphic

The green “qibla” circle in the graphic above is from the prayer-direction calculator at Islam.com. It shows the direction to Mecca from Somerset PA (ten miles from the crash site). The red arrow shows that a person standing between the crescent tips and facing into the center of the crescent will be facing almost exactly at Mecca.

This Mecca orientation claim must be authoritatively investigated and answered. If it is true that the crescent points to Mecca, and hence can serve as an Islamic prayer direction indicator (the central feature around which every mosque is built), then whether this construct was intentional or not, it indelibly taints the design.

3. THE ISLAMIC SUNDIAL

Anyone can see the overt similarity between a traditional Islamic sundial (left-hand image) and Tower of Voices part of the Flight 93 Memorial (right-hand image):

SundialComposite65%

When the shadow of the traditional sundial reaches the outer curved vertical in this photo, it will be time for Islamic afternoon prayers. Shadow calculations confirm that, on any day of the year, when the shadow of the 93 foot tall crescent shaped Tower of Voices reaches the inner arc of trees, it will also be time for Islamic afternoon prayers.

4. THE FORTY-FOUR BLOCKS

Tom Burnett Sr. does not want Tom Junior’s name inscribed on one of the 44 translucent blocks that are to be emplaced along the flight path. Forty-four is the number of passengers, crew, AND terrorists:

MemorialWallPlus44thBlock30%

The left side of this graphic shows the Memorial Wall, which follows the path of Flight 93 down to the point of impact. At eye level are 43 glass blocks. Forty are inscribed with the names of the 40 heroes. Three are inscribed with the 9/11 date.

Right-hand image: the 44th glass block sits at the end of the Entry Portal Walkway, where the flight path crosses the upper crescent tip. It marks the spot where, in architect Paul Murdoch’s description, the terrorists broke our humanitarian circle, turning it into a giant (Islamic shaped) crescent. This circle-breaking, crescent-creating feat is memorialized by the inscription: “A field of honor forever.”

The Park Service dismisses the suspicious block count on the grounds that the 44th glass block is much larger than the others. Mr. Burnett is not comforted by the magnificence of the 44th block, and neither are we. This design must be stopped, and investigations must be launched!

Other petition formats

The same four intolerable features are described in the annotated "Map of Betrayal" that was the subject of one of last month's blogbursts. Thus the map makes a perfectly serviceable back side for the petition, providing an alternative petition/flyer combination.

The information on the map is denser than the explanations above, but has its own intrigue, showing how the different terrorist memorializing parts fit together like an elaborate puzzle.

The petition being circulated on the ground now in Pennsylvania is still another variation. It has slightly different wording than the electronic petition, and slightly different explanations of the four points than presented above. All the different formats are interchangeable. They all highlight the same four objectionable features, and they will all be delivered together to state and federal legislators.

Until we get a Congressional investigation, the petition will be an ongoing tool for raising awareness and registering opposition. If you participate in any activist fora or email lists, please forward the text and links along. (The electronic and paper-petition links are collected together on this petition Page at CrescentOfBetrayal.com.)

Literary Thoughts: Knights of the Black and White

I'm not a big fan of fantasy literature. Sure, I've read "Lord of the Rings" and "Watership Down" and they were  enjoyable. But mostly, I'm not into reading stuff where people are named stuff like 'Glimmermear', just can't seem to get to into it. I mean, seriously, if you have refer to a glossary just to pronounce the names, it's just too much work to make for an enjoyable read. But I digress...

Jack Whyte is an author I hadn't heard of when I ran out of reading material and was at the local Dillon's store where I managed to find this book. It is book one of the "Templar Trilogy". Now, I've always been a sucker for the mysteries of the Knights Templar, the Priory of Sion, ancient Church societies and the like. So I picked it up. He starts his tale just before the first Crusade in the mid 11th Century. Knowing this, I was a bit curious how he would handle the Crusades and subsequent occupation of Jerusalem and other areas of the Middle East.

And true to any author in today's climate who doesn't want to have a fatwa issued against him, or be branded a racist, the occupying Muslims were all nice, peaceful folks until the Franks from Christendom invaded their land and brutalized everyone. And even after that, the Muslims (along with the group who were to become the Knights Templar) were the only people who had any honor.

Now, I don't mind books that are critical of the Church or Christianity. I loved Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons" (even more than his "DaVinci Code"). And I know that throughout history, and especially in the early part of the second millennium, the Church was full of people who were only out for themselves. People who, by birth order, were pretty much forced into priesthood and what not. But come on, could Whyte not find one single Church official that would display at least some modicum of Christian ideals? For him, every pastor, bishop, cardinal and pope, everything they did, they did for some ulterior, self-gratifying motive. In addition to that, there must have been twenty or thirty pages, peppered throughout the book, where he kept repeating how evil and dishonorable the invaders from Christendom were. Once or twice, and I can get the message, but over and over ad nauseam. It started to remind me of that 50+ page speech given by John Galt in "Atlas Shrugged" (I have to be honest about that, I didn't read the whole speech).

But his misrepresentation of history aside, the book wasn't all bad. His descriptions of the people and the surroundings and the activities were well thought out. The story, while a bit slow to get rolling, did start to click along at a good pace once Jerusalem was conquered. I'm certain that I will finish the trilogy when the others come out in paperback - if only because I'm a sucker for stories of the Templars. Kind of like I'm a sucker for time travel movies, no matter how badly they stink, I can't not watch 'em.

The Bigsibling Blog » Crescent of Betrayal Blogburst…
Islamic symbolism causing fundraising problems for Flight 93 Memorial Blogburst logo, no accident Pennsylvanians know about the Islamic symbolism in the Flight 93 Memorial, and have stopped donating. The first indication came last September when State Senator Jane Orie came aboard as a fundraiser. She got a quick education in growing controversy. In a 9/11 radio interview with Pittsburgh talker Fred Honsberger, Orie explained why she hoped the Flight 93 families would get back together and revisit their design choice:
Orie: "No matter who it is, and no matter where I went today for 9/11 events, everybody brought up this crescent. Whether it is intentional or not, it is disturbing to people." Honsberger: "So everyone is bringing it up to you." Orie: "Absolutely."
At that time, the Memorial Project had collected about $12.5 million, far short of the huge design's anticipated 60 million dollar price tag. Six months later the amount sits at "A little more than $12 million." It is possible that they are actually spending more on their fundraising efforts than they are raising. Bill Steiner, who has been rustling up opposition on the ground in PA, dropped by Somerset recently and had a conversation with Memorial Project Superintendent Joanne Hanley. She appeared beleaguered, and confided that fundraising was sluggish, suggesting that the memorial would probably have to be built in stages. Presumably she meant something other than the normal stages of building, but was anticipating delays. Now this week the Somerset Daily American has an editorial complaining that the whole state seems to be dumping on Somerset County, bemoaning amongst other things the lack of funding for the Flight 93 Memorial. This is not the preferred way to stop architect Paul Murdoch's terroist memorial mosque from being built. The damn thing ought to just be stopped by those in government who are in a position to stop it, so that a new and fitting design can be selected. At that point, money will be needed, but for now, with Murdoch in full command of the hijacked memorial, lack of money is what is needed. Starving the engines of fuel is one way to keep the hijacker from reaching his target, and until the hijacker is stopped, nothing else matters. The people get it, and are voting with their pocketbooks. When are our our elected representatives going to step up and do their part? Senator Orie is not the only Pennsylvania state legislator who has expressed concern, but Congressman Tancredo is as yet the only politician to actually call for the crescent design to be scrapped. If our representatives can't be leaders, can't they at least be followers? To join our blogbursts, email Cao (caoilfhionn1 at gmail dot com) with your blog's url.

Liberals want to pull out early

It seems to me, and granted, I am a few hours short of my political science degree, that if we pull out of Iraq now, things in that region would get tons worse than they currently are.  It seems that Iran would become a huge and heavy handed influence.  In the 1980s we supported Iraq in the Iraq/Iran war because it was in absolutely no one's best interest that Iran gain control of the Iraqi oil fields (other than Iran's of course).  Now the liberals want to pull out.

Quote

Most Democrats share the view that we should pressure the White House to commence the phased redeployment of U.S. troops from Iraq in four to six months — to begin that phased redeployment

If only the liberals would pull out early more often, we wouldn't have so many around to mess things up.

Heroes

X-Men knock-off that aint all bad

We are two episodes into Heroes (NBC 9/8c) and it looks like it's going to be a good show.  I had been wanting to see the series since early summer when commercials for it started appearing on USA Network, Sci-Fi Channel and NBC.

I wasn't too sure what to expect.  It seemed like it might be an X-Men knock-off with mutant powers and what not.  And that is pretty much what it is.  Except with the wealth and abilities of Patrick Stewart (and no cool leather costumes...yet).
The story thus far;

Claire Bennet, a high school cheerleader from Odessa, Texas has realized she is nigh invulnerable.  She can do just about anything, and her body regenerates and fixes itself almost immediately.  We are introduced to her jumping off an oil rig while the school A/V geek films it.  She stands up from the fall broken and twisted and miraculously heals right away.  Later she runs through the fire of a train wreck to save a man, and doesn't get burned.

Peter Petrelli is a male nurse who sits with and cares for dieing people.  He knows what they want and what makes them happy, but he is plagued by dreams of flying.  His brother Nathan Petrelli is a politician running for congress.  Peter tries to talk with Nathan about his dreams but is brushed aside.  Peter calls Nathan to meet him in an alley, and then proceeds to jump off a seven story building.  Nathan flies up to catch him.  We are left with the impression that Nathan has known for quite some time that he has this ability.  Meanwhile, Peter discovers he too can fly, but it seems at this point only in a state of extreme agitation.

Nathan Petrelli is Peter's brother, and running for congress (which he'll win if the future Hiro experienced is correct).  He can fly, but doesn't like to admit it.

Isaac Mendez is an artist and heroine addict who paints future disasters.  He painted the scene of a suicide bomber in Israel three weeks before it happened.  Down to the number on the bus that was destroyed.  He painted the firey train wreck in Odessa, Texas that Claire Bennet ran into and saved a man (although it would have been cool if he had painted a Claire in the scene - maybe they thought that was alittle too much).  While trying to go clean, Isaac paints a vision of a giant mushroom cloud destroying New York City.

Hiro is a japanese working who is a huge anime fan.  He obsesses about heroes and their place in the world.  He discovers he can bend the time-space conitnuum and teleport himself to different locales (like on Star Trek he keeps saying).  While on a train, he teleports himself to New York City where he finds a comic book called "9th Wonders" written by Isaac Mendez - which has his story in it.  He heads to the Isaac's studio only to find Isaac dead with the top half of his head cut off...and his brain missing - that's when the police show up and assume Hiro is the killer.  As he is being questioned by the police, he tells them he just teleported into New York and his friend in Japan can verify that the previous envening they were at a bar having drinks.  The NYPD calls the friend in Japan who claims not to have seen Hiro for five weeks.  Hiro believes it is still 2 October, but the police point out it is 8 November (and Petrelli has won the election by a landslide).  As they are discussing the date, an explosion of what appears to be nuclear proportions occurs.  As the explosion cloud approaches his location, Hiro teleports himself back to Japan in what looks like the same instant that he left.  So not only can he teleport himself to other locations, apperantly he can teleport himself through time as well.

Niki Sanders is a web slut single mom in Las Vegas making ends meet by stripping via web cam on the internet.  She's been having the feeling of being watched.  Sometimes, she doesn't believe the reflection she castes in the mirror is really her.  Her son, Micah is some kind of genius, when we first see him he is rebuilding his computer's mainboard, and he's only like 6 or maybe 8.  She took loan for 3 large from a loan shark in order to get Micah into a special private school they could help him with all those smarts.  Only thing is, she couldn't pay it back.  When the shark sends two of his goons to collect, she didn't have the money.  The goons decide she can reduce her debt by servicing them.  As they start to beat on her, she blacks out, and when she wakes up, the goons are dead and her garage/studio is in shambles.  Later, she loses four hours of time, and when she returns home, the garage/studio is all cleaned up, the bodies are gone, and a caddy sits across the street with keys for it hanging in the garage.  In the trunk of the caddy are the bodies of the goons with a map.  She follows the map to a remote location where she finds a shovel. She starts digging, presumeably to bury the bodies, but in the process uncovers another body (I am thinking this is Micah's father).  After all this story, I still can't figure out what Niki's power is.

The Unit - season premier

CBS' "The Unit" season 2 starts

The Unit on CBS (Tuesdays 20:00 hrs CDT) is the absolute best 60 minute commercial for the United States Army every created.  The good guys go out to kill and/or capture the bad guys.  They always accomplish their mission (despite how many times the mission objectives might change) and they always come home.

AND when they get home, their wives and children are there waiting for them all happy to see them and so extremely supportive of how their men go off to keep the world safe and fight for truth, justice and the American way.

Hey, I said it was a great commercial for the Army, I didn't say it was in any way realistic.  But sometimes that's just what is needed.  All of the great old TV shows (Charlie's Angels, Starsky & Hutch, etc) were not the least bit realistic.  Too much realism started creeping into TV with shows like Hill Street Blues.  It's good to get some shows that are not realistic, but simply entertaining.

And this show is all that.  The season opener didn't take up from last season's cliff-hanger where Jonas was shot and laying on the floor.  It looks like it picked up about 6 or 8 months later.  Jonas was all healed, the baby was born to the "newbs" and they were already in the field along the Pakistani/Afgan border.  From there it just got better.  It did leave you wondering if they folks who crashed the wedding party and did all the shooting last season were ever apprehended.  I'm guessing not and that story arc will be taken up in the next two or three episodes.

Criminality of the Pope

Will Il Papa have the right to remain silent?

As you know, Muslims from all over the world are violently angered that Pope Benedict quoted an old emporer who said that the only thing Mohammed brought was inhuman and evil. The peace-loving, tolerant and rational Muslims, while not burning and shooting at churches, are busy being hurt and offended by Il Papa's suggestiong that Islam is portrayed as a violent irrational religion. It is beyond me how anyone could see these people as "irrational".

Employees of the state body that organizes Muslim worship in Turkey asked the authorities on Tuesday to open legal proceedings against Pope Benedict and to arrest him when he visits the country in November.
source

Il Papa in hot water

Pope's quotation of nearly ancient statement lands him in the hotseat.

The Pope is getting grief for speaking what many see as the truth about Islam. For those living in complete darkness, here is what Il Papa had to say in a speech in Germany:

The Pope's speech quoted from a book recounting a conversation between 14th century Byzantine Christian Emperor Manuel Paleologos II and an educated Persian on the truths of Christianity and Islam. "The emperor comes to speak about the issue of jihad, holy war," the Pope said. "He said, I quote, 'Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached'."
(source)
Of course, the muslims around the globe are criticizing the beloved pontiff. Such as the spiritual leader of Lebanon's Sunnis, the Grand Mufti Sheik Mohammed Rashid Kabbani:

"Reason is the substance of Islam and its teachings ... Islam prohibited violence in human life. Anyone who wants the truth (about Islam) must take it from Islam's holy book, the Koran, rather than from a dialogue or excerpts,"
(source)

But it is oft said that actions speak louder than words. For instance:

"Anyone who describes Islam as a religion as intolerant encourages violence," (Pakistan's )Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said.
(source)

"We want to make it clear that if the pope does not appear on TV and apologize for his comments, we will blow up all of Gaza’s churches," the group (The Sword of Islam) said in a statement.
(source)

In Gaza City, militants opened fire from a car at a Greek Orthodox church, striking the facade. A policeman at the scene said he saw a Mitsubishi escape with armed men inside. Explosive devices were set off at the same Gaza church on Friday, causing minor damage.
(source)

...four masked gunmen doused the main doors of Nablus' Roman and Greek Catholic churches with lighter fluid, then set them afire. They also opened fire on the buildings, striking both with bullets.
(source)

Firebombings left black scorch marks on the walls and windows of Nablus' Anglican and Greek Orthodox churches. At least five firebombs hit the Anglican church and its door was later set ablaze. Smoke billowed from the church as firefighters put out the flames.
(source)

And so it goes with the people who claim to subscribe to a religion of peace and tolerance. It does seem that the Indians (from India, not the Injuns from America) have it right:

In India, Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, who is president of the Indian Catholic Bishops Conference, said the Christian community in that country must face Muslim protests over the pope's speech "with Christian courage and prayer because truth needs no other defense,".

Getting drive information in C#

Using System.Management and Win32_LogicalDisk

In my last post, I briefly spoke about finding drive information in a C# application. The problem I've been trying to solve is that I have a windows form that needs to run at the end of an install.  The form allows the user to copy files from a specific location on the install DVD to the users machine.  The files are about 1.3Gb, and I didn't really want to package all that data into one MSI file.  A problem arose when the install was finished, and the little windows application was copied to the user's machine, how can I find the DVD drive?  And after I found a DVD drive, how can I make certain it is the correct drive with the correct disk?

I started out by importing the kernel32.dll and using the external GetDriveType(string drive).  This worked, but I was really wanting to find a C# way to do this without having to import anything else.  Enter System.Management - which allows a user to get all of this information natively in C# using Win32_LogicalDisk.  Win32_LogicalDisk give you access to a plethora of information on all physical and mapped network drives.  You can get the drive name, device id, volume name, serial number and on and on.  In addition, you can run SQL type queries against the drive to get just the desired information from the desired drives or drive types or drive sizes and so forth.

Since I am interested in finding CD/DVD drives, I had to find how to tell what kind of drive I was looking at.  The following (from the above linked MSDN page) table was a great help:
Value
Meaning
0
Unknown
1
No Root Directory
2
Removeable Disk
3
Local Disk
4
Network Drive
5
Compact Disc
6
RAM Disk

Using System.Management.ManagementObjectCollection and System.Management.ManagementObjectSearcher I was able to create a collection of all drives with a device type of 5.

ManagementScope ms = new ManagementScope();
ObjectQuery oq  = new ObjectQuery("SELECT DeviceID, VolumeName FROM Win32_LogicalDisk WHERE DriveType= 5");
ManagementObjectSearcher mos = new ManagementObjectSearcher(ms,oq);
ManagementObjectCollection moc = mos.Get();

Then I loop through the collection to check out each object's information:

foreach (ManagementObject mo in moc)
{
    if (moc["VolumeName"].ToString() == "myString")
      DirectoryInfo newDI = new DirectoryInfo(System.IO.Path.Combine(mo["DeviceID"].ToString(), "myPath"));
}

So now I have what should be the proper path to the files I want to install.

Another route to this information is via the ManagementClass class.  It is a little cleaner, and a bit quicker to code, but does give you more than you might need for your particular purpose.

ManagementClass mc = new ManagementClass("Win32_LogicalDisk");
ManagementObjectCollection moc = mc.getInstances();
foreach (ManagementObject mo in moc)
{
   // Your code here
}

Few less lines of code, but a much more generic return on the drive information.

Windows Installer Experiences

Launching a windows application after install completes in Windows Installer

I was tasked at work to become the "install czar" so to speak.  For this, I needed to learn some things about the Windows Installer.  While there is a pretty good guide for the Windows Installer at Microsoft's MSDN site, much of the information was elusive.  For instance, I needed information about custom actions.  For one installation I created a windows forms application which would copy a boat-load of images from the install DVD to the client machine.  The images were about 3Gb in total size, so I didn't want to package them in the install.  The install contained a small sampling of the images, and it was bulging at 300+Mb - this takes such a long time to process, checkout, build etc.

MS has a pretty good CustomAction Reference page, but it didn't cover everything I was looking at.  I went into the setup project I had created in VS 2003, added the .EXE I had created and added it to the "Install" custom action.  It seems to me, this should have worked, but it didn't.  It appeared the EXE was never called.  So I downloaded the Windows Platform SDK which comes with an ultra-cool tool called Orca which allows editing of the MSI tables.  Looking at the tables, the EXE being called had a type of 1024.  However, there was not 1024 type in the reference page.

Long story short, I found this blog from some guy calling himself Boneman, which is an excellent tutorial for Custom Actions in the Windows Installer.

I tried everything I could think of to get this stupid application to launch at the end of the install - nothing seemed to work.  Then I went and revisited the Custom Actions section in the VS IDE.  What I found was a property settings named "InstallerClass".  I set that to "False" and voila!  It worked!

But my application was flawed.  I didn't know exactly what the working directory would be, I thought it would be the directory from which the install was launched.  I was wrong, it was the directory in which the application file was placed. Now I needed to find the correct DVD drive in order to get the images off of it.  To accomplish this goal, I imported the kernel32.dll to access the GetDriveType and GetVolumeInformation methods.  These two methods return to me the type of drive, and all of the drive information you think you might ever want.  Well, actually, the GetDriveType returns a System.Long value, and you have to know what each value represents.  Here is how I figured drive type:

[DllImport("kernel32.dll")]
    public static extern long GetDriveType(string driveLetter);

private int
DriveType(string asDrive)
{
    if ((GetDriveType(asDrive) & 5) == 5)
        return 5;
    if ((GetDriveType(asDrive) & 3) == 3)
        return 3;
    if ((GetDriveType(asDrive) & 2) == 2)
        return 2;
    if ((GetDriveType(asDrive) & 4) == 4)
        return 4;
    if ((GetDriveType(asDrive) & 6) == 6)
        return 6;

Now, figuring out that 5 is the CD drive took quite a bit of searching, but having the Platform SDK mentioned above sure helps.  At any rate, I got the CD drive, then looked for the volume name that I named the DVD during creation.  If it locates that and the proper directory is on that disc, then it copies the files.  If not, I pop up a folder browse window to allow the user to determine where the image files are.

9/11: 5 years later

Where does the time go?

Sunday night I watched the 9/11 documentary aired on CBS.  In fact, I made my two boys (11 & 13) watch it as well.  It's a great show, and I recommend that every single American over the age of 10 watch this documentary.  There is some bad language in it, but it is an accurate historical archive of that dreadful day, caught by French filmmakers, Jules and Gedeon Naudet completely by chance and happenstance.

The two filmmakers were filming a documentary of an FDNY rookie, from entering the academy through his first 9 months on the job as a "probie" or probationary firefighter.  The probie was housed at Ladder 1 Engine 7, several blocks from the WTC.  It was chance and luck that the filmmakers were at that station, who were the very first responders to the disaster.  They have actual footage (and I believe the only footage) from inside the WTC Tower 1.

It doesn't quite feel like 5 years since the attacks on 9/11.  It feel, in some ways like it was just last week - but in other ways it is so surreal it feels like it wasn't even in my lifetime. I don't fully know how to describe it.  Living in fly-over country, it isn't very difficult to not think about that day.  To just go about life like it never happened.  To try and remember to pick the milk up on the way home from work, to help the kids with their homework, or mow the lawn or what not.  But it's not something we normally wake up with every day.  We don't pass ground-zero in the cab on the way to work.  Most of us here in the middle lands didn't lose people in the attacks, and it wasn't very close to home really.  We couldn't see the smoke or devestation except through the TV.

I was appalled on the way to work today at how many businesses and houses did not fly the United States flag at half-mast.  How quickly we all forget...or perhaps it is that they are afraid to offend people.  I am still a bit uncertain how the American flag can offend those people living and working in America.  And it is beyond my scope of understanding how companies can prohibit the display of the flag because some might be offended (this did happend shortly after 9/11 and again shortly after the invasion of Iraq).

I'm interspersing this entry with pictures from 9/11.  I think it's terribly important that people look at the pictures and videos frequently.  The more we see them, the less likely we are to forget.
